A Non-eiffel Tower Tourist Spot In Paris

A non-eiffel tower tourist spot in Paris Posted 14 June 2010
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE THE EIFFEL TOWER! I really do! The breath-taking view from the top is nothing short of majestic; but I would just like to point out some other tourist spots that are equally amazing.

The Louvre Museum is probably one of the most visited museums in Paris and in the whole world. What is great about this place is that you not only visit a world renowned museum, you also get to see the famous "Mona Lisa".

I always believe that there is more to Paris than the Eiffel Tower..what are the places do you think a first time tourist should visit in Paris? :D

I'll list a few not so touristy spots, it would be useless otherwise.
PicPus, nice area in the 13th.
île aux Cygnes : amazing walk in the middle of the river from the Statue of Liberty to pont Bir-Hakeim (loveliest bridge in Paris in my opinion, you'll see it in many many many movies - Spielberg's Munich is one of them).
Abesses : crowded but still pretty authentic (as opposed to Montmartre which is soooo kitchy, haha bad painters there:).
Ménilmontant : popular, off the beaten path, great.
Gambetta : even more off the beaten path, Père Lachaise, hilly, lovely Art-Nouveau Métro entrance.
Passy : totally upscale but very nice.

Just walking in Paris is a great pleasure. Newcomers should probably start at the center and spiral out. Any street market is a lively affair.

There are lots of little-known corners, like the Butte Aux Cailles, which is becoming artier and livelier every year, or the bars around St. Maur. The rue de Lappe with all its bars (near the Bastille). The Buttes Chaumont.

The list is endless. It really is.

I have to agree with Butte-aux-calles, has to be one of my favorite places, although in winter, it can lack its luster which it has in good weather.

Try Institut du Monde Arabe, I like Arabic history and its great to cull all the fundamentalist crap we've been hit with lately.

Also, yes Menilmontant and crawl into some of the darker spots around Boulevard Rochecouart.

Oh and at Divan du Monde near Pigalle, it's a great club if you like music. New Wave night is the first Saturday of each month, I try not o miss it!

Bonne Chance et Bonne Paris!
