My Welsh great grandmother was born in France as a British Subject.
The UK Census of 1971 listed her birthplace as:
France, La Basancha' VBS (the "BS" stands for British Subject)
I have a graphic of the actual entry but the message board will not let me post it until I've made 25 previous, spam-free posts.
The census worker was probably spelling the birthplace in English phonetically. To complicate matters further, the worker was Welsh and probably spoke Cymraeg as his first language. My Welsh great grandparents lived in Paris for about a year after they were married where he studied his craft as a tailor.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
