------------Detailed info on the neighborhood ---------------

->Our street

Villa de lErmitage is a quiet village-like street. A street association organizes regular events (pot-luck meals, holiday parties, etc) at which neighbors can get to know each other. Its a dead-end street, and on warmer afternoons, neighborhood children play outside. Residents have planted many trees and flowers which never cease to amaze passers-by, all year round. Indeed, the street is on many guidebooks.

A community garden at the top of the street is a lovely place to relax while gardening and to meet neighbors of all ages and origins.

->Practicalities

Everything you need for daily living is right nearby. Within about 3-5 mn you will find-supermarkets, post office,-bakeries, banks, etc. There's a nice street market just around the corner on Sundays, and street markets 10-15 mn away on most other days.

->Culture, food, and nightlife

The neighborhood has many theatres, including part of the prestigious Theatre National as well as smaller theaters.

An independent cinema (mk2) is 10 mn away at Gambetta.

There are many concert venues, including the Studio de lErmitage just around the corner, which often features African and other World Music acts, and the Maroquinerie. La Bellevilleuse is an enormous independent exhibit space just two blocks away.

A new cultural center will open soon around the corner.

The famous Pere Lachaise cemetery, where Edit Piaf, Jim Morrison, and Oscar Wilde (among others) are buried, is also about 12 mn away.

The area is reputed to be the area with the highest density of artists in all of Europe. Twice a year, artists hold an Open Studio event when they open their doors to the public.

Belleville, with its lively mix of Chinese restaurants, North African, and Jewish eateries, is a 15 mn walk away.

Rue Oberkampf, home of many trendy bars and restaurants, is a 20mn walk downhill.

->Parks

The area has several small parks 3-5 mn away. The lovely park de Belleville, with its panoramic view of Paris, is 10 mn away, and the romantic Park des Buttes-Chaumont is a 20mn walk away.
