We live in a freshly made loft in a sturdy commercial building in Belleville, Paris. When I say commercial building, it truely is that, with a printer on the ground floor, and offices in the rest of the building complete with industrial elevators. The loft is well equiped with all household appliances including a dish washer, washer, and dryer. It has a generous shower with a wooden tub. Keeping in mind that this is a loft, a large open space, it sleeps quite comfortably three or people in 1 double bed and 1 single. Sleeping areas are set up on cute windowed mezzanines. The piano sounds as lovely as it looks.
The best part about where we live is where we live ! Belleville, home of Edith Piaf, haunt of Victor Hugo, is no longer the quaint black and white Paris of Robert Doisneau photographs. Belleville is colored with 80 different nationalities each one contributing to make it the most dynamic neighbourhood in Paris. It is packed with good restaurants ranging from main dishes at a dollar fifty at the African Canteen to proudly pricey French cuisine. For a generous dose of night life take a ten minute walk to rue dOberkamf. The spacious boulevard at the end of our block transforms twice a week into the largest fresh produce market in Paris, (prices extremely reasonable). One block behind us lies the park de Belleville where one can actually lie on the lawn, (unusual for Paris) and enjoy a full city view, the Eiffel Tower as the center piece. Just a little further is the luscious park des Buttes Chaumonts. 5 metro stops from Hotel de Ville but off the beaten tourist track, Belleville is the real Paris experience.
